There’s an incredible number of free CMSes out there, but I’m befuddled that we can’t find even one that has a complete set of features. I spent half the day yesterday installing different systems on my Solaris and Linux boxes, yet none had a) a usable WYSIWYG editor that worked in browsers other than IE and b) were built on Linux/Unix-Apache-MySQL-PHP (LAMP).
Aegir-CMS looked like a winner at first, at least according to their site, but it’s based on the Midgard framework, which is basically IMPOSSIBLE to install. It needs its own libraries and Apache modules built into the system, which for a hosted site is not feasible. They offer a PHP-based Midgard lite, but that flat out does not work.
It looks like Bitflux could be an excellent product, and I actually had success installing it, but although their online demo had an excellent WYSIWYG editor built-in, their release version doesn’t have that functionality yet. The author is modifying their system to include the Mozile editor. This is VERY cool — check out the Mozile demo with your Mozilla/Netscape browser. Once that’s in place, I think we’ll be in business.
