Lukey and Theo

Posted by Oscar on August 24th, 2008

The past week or two, Luke has turned a corner. No longer does he sleep all day - now he takes short naps and is much more active with his surroundings. Today he had his first real morsel of food, a bit of canteloupe, as we had brunch with Janna, Dana and Genevieve.

Yesterday, Luke held his weight for a few seconds while standing up - he is a strong little guy. Pretty soon he’ll be crawling.

Theo has been learning words every night on his “Word Board”. We choose a word to learn, write it on the board, and then he is responsible for reading that word every time we encounter it in a book. He’s got 15 words so far, from “he” and “and” to “water” and “shark”. He’s making awesome progress, and enjoys the process.

President’s Club

Posted by Oscar on August 18th, 2008

On Saturday night, Steve got us tickets for the President’s Club at Nats Park. Before that night, I would have said that $350 for baseball tickets is absurd. After our experience there, I’m now not so sure of the absurdity of it all.

The seats are amazing. We were as close to the catcher as the pitcher is. Every hit was a visceral experience. The plays at the plate were mind blowing. Livan Hernandez, in his return to DC, would routinely toss balls to the little kids sitting in the rows in front of us.

The food was all you can eat, and wonderful. A very nice buffet dinner was inside the club, along with a full bar and all the soda/chips/popcorn/crackerjack you could eat. I had pork tenderloin and seafood ravioli, followed by a huge piece of rich chocolate cake. They would bring food to you at your seat, if you wanted. The Nats lost 13-6, but it hardly mattered, since we had just a wonderful experience.

Afterwards, we sat in the President’s Club and watched the Olympics with a small group of people, including Don Sutton, who was at the bar a few steps from where we were sitting. We drank beer/wine, chatted, and watched as Michael Phelps won his 8th gold.

Danielle and I did not want to leave - it was a BLAST.

Sleep

Posted by Oscar on July 15th, 2008

Luke slept from 10pm to 7 am last night in his crib, without waking up
at all for food. Amazing!

I wish we were getting as much sleep. For me, between the CISSP exam
I took last Saturday, the Baltimore Lab AD migrations, and the EDU-519
class we are teaching, sleep has been a rare commodity in July, and it
has nothing to do with Luke!

Jury Duty

Posted by Oscar on July 2nd, 2008

was over by 11am. One trial fizzled when the accused pled out, the other was a nolli, which apparently means that the trial is suspended for some reason or another. So, I’m jury-free for the next 3-5 years, and I’ve got an extra $15 burning a hole in my pocket.

Jury Duty!

Posted by Oscar on July 2nd, 2008

Today I am sitting in jury duty - the first time I’ve ever been called. So far, all we’ve done is to check in. They’re showing us a cheesy video about how a trial works, riveting information like what a “defendant” is and so on. Basically I either get called to a trial, which means I’ll be here for a few days, or I don’t get called, which means I get to twiddle my thumbs all day long. I’m not sure which outcome I am wishing for…

Theoism

Posted by Oscar on June 30th, 2008

A great Theo-ism from this weekend at Suzie and David’s house:

He was playing with some magnetic letters and I asked him to spell “jet”. This is a word we had worked on the previous week. After getting the right letters and spelling the word, he exclaimed with glee, “I didn’t remember it in my head, but I remembered it in my arms!”

Invalid Node Structure

Got that dreaded error message on my Mac this weekend. Afgter some wrestling with Disk Utility, and having it fail to fix my drive, I finally got it to work with DiskWarrior. Here’s a quick run-down of how I fixed the Invalid Node Structure error.

Superhero Movies

Theo and I played with my Macbook’s camera, making stop-motion movies with his toys. Here are our very silly results:
